Rancho Viejo is a neighborhood just 20 minutes from downtown Santa Fe and is developed on 11,000 acres of the former Rancho Viejo Cattle Ranch. Peppered with Juniper and Pinon pines, the subdivision is a collection of villages, each with its own central gathering plaza.  50% of the land is dedicated to natural open space. There’s the Lucky Bean Coffee House in the center and Santa Fe Place (formerly The Villa Linda Mall) is just 5 minutes away featuring Dillard’sSearsGap and Regal Theaters, to name a few. The 13,000 student campus of  the Community College is located in Rancho Viejo, as is the Institute of American Indian Arts.

“From out of the clear blue of the western sky…comes Sky King!”

I remember television’s Sky King and his niece, Penny, from my childhood as they would flying their Cessna over vast ranch lands. I still get the same feeling today as I had then when I’d dream about Life in the American West.

I’ll see you in the neighborhood,

Michael

Upper Canyon Road – The Neighborhoods of Santa Fe, New Mexico

Upper Canyon Road – The Neighborhoods of Santa Fe, New Mexico

The sky shines with an evening sun that turns the Sangre de Cristo (Blood of Christ) Mountains the color of watermelon. Tonia and I were married in the gardens of the Randall Davy Audubon Center at the end of Upper Canyon Road.  12 years later our son, Nick, became a camp councilor there. Fed by the snowmelt, three reservoirs serve as some of the city’s drinking water and spill into the Santa Fe River. Just 3 miles from the Santa Fe Plaza and bordering the Santa Fe National Forest is a 190 acre urban preserve run by the Nature Conservancy.  Willow trees and cottonwoods, beaver and birds paint the landscape along the trailhead of the 20-mile Dale Ball Hiking Trail.  A series of ponds and wetlands make this neighborhood first choice for our family’s regular hikes.

Canyon Road – The Neighborhoods of Santa Fe, New Mexico – Michael’s Blog

Canyon Road – The Neighborhoods of Santa Fe, New Mexico – Michael’s Blog

Rich in art and history, Canyon Road is the cultural center of Santa Fe.  Located in the heart of the Historic Eastside, the art galleries found on the ¾ mile lane are what help make Santa Fe not only a world-class travel destination but also the 2nd largest art market in the country.  My family takes its daily walk on Canyon Road from our home in the South Capitol District.  One of our favorite destinations is The Teahouse,

on the corner of Palace Avenue and Canyon Road, where we stop for one of their exotic teas and a decadent pastry. The adobe walls and luxury gardens are a spectacular sight this time of year and it’s a delight when we can discover who and what lives behind them. Santa Fe was once known as the Lilac Capitol of the world.  The word “Gringo” was given to us during the Mexican-American War (1846-1848), when U.S. Cavalry troops, riding through Mexico, would sing “Green Grow the Lilacs”.   You’ll also find Nathalie’s

clothing and furniture shop, fine dining at Geronimo’s,

live music and Spanish tapas served at El Farol.

If you hear my Christmas music album, “A Tender Santa Fe Christmas“,

you’ll get the feel for what awaits you on Christmas Eve, when thousands of people from all over the world gather here to walk Canyon Road in a light snow, to view the decorations, sing carols around blazing luminarios and to share in the spirit that is Santa Fe.

Girls’ Day Tea Gathering - Peach Blossom Festival

The month of March is the time of the Hina Matsuri or the Doll Festival, traditionally taking place on the third day of the third month with displays of dolls representing the Emperor and Empress.

Lighting the lights,

The shadows of the dolls,

One for each

                               ~ Shiki

While the charcoal burns in the hearth, guests are invited to have a bowl of fragrant tea and traditional Japanese sweets. Sunrise Springs-The Neighborhoods of Santa Fe, New Mexico

Sunrise Springs-The Neighborhoods of Santa Fe, New Mexico

Sunrise Springs, located in the richly soiled region of the Rio Grande basin and La Cienega Valley, can be traced back as far as more than three thousand years. American Indians were attracted to the nourishing springs that seep throughout the valley where they took refuge under the high desert cottonwoods and willow trees at Sunrise Springs. This highly fertile land has always been used for raising gardens, sheep ranching and other livestock grazing. Pottery chards and stone foundations of nearby El Alamo and Las Golondrinas reveal a substantial history of the cultural settlement and trade in the La Cienega area.

By the time of the Spanish arrival in the late 16th century, there was mention of at least two large Indian Pueblos in La Cienega and La Cieneguilla. La Cienega continued to be inhabited through the 17th century by the Tano Indians. La Cieneguilla was abandoned by the Keres Indians in the early 1600’s but was subsequently reoccupied by the Spanish in the 1630’s.

By the early 17th century, Sunrise Springs had become a paraje, a resting place, on the original El Camino Real which was the last significant stage coach stopping place en route to Santa Fe from Mexico City and the first stop coming from Santa Fe. Here, next to a ranch then called El Alamo, travelers refreshed themselves with a hearty, simple meal while their stock was rested and was watered.

In 1902, the government patented Sunrise Springs to Juan B. Lamy. At that time, the land consisted of 64.22 acres and since has added five more acres. Juan is thought by folk historians to have been the adopted son of folk-figure Archbishop Lamy. The town Lamy in New Mexico is named for the Archbishop.

On March 12, 1906, the Sunrise Springs property was then sold to Jose and Carmelita Vieira. One of their sons, Francisco Vieira, was born in the house that is now the Blue Heron. His family still resides in La Cienega today. In 1935, Jose Vieira died, leaving his widow and eleven children at the mercy of the First National Bank. The Bank sued the heirs and sold the property by Special Master’s Deed to satisfy a mortgage.

Megan Hill’s vision for her land has always been to preserve and protect the natural beauty of the grounds. Today, visitors to Sunrise Springs will find a tranquil oasis to retreat from their stressful everyday lives. An old hacienda has become the heart of the Blue Heron Restaurant. The former stagecoach stop is one of the many unique retreat spaces for private meetings and celebrations. The original adobe artist studios have magnificent views of the ponds while the thirty-two garden rooms are surrounded by uniquely designed southwestern and traditional meditative gardens. The lush solitude, which impressed the first Spanish settlers, still remains.

Sunrise Springs is currently listed for sale by Christine McDonald at 505.992.3594 and Michael  D’Alfonso at 505.992.3579
