As the morning spreads over the city you decide to take a stroll on one of the most picturesque streets on the East side of Santa Fe. It’s a short walk from the downtown Plaza, up Canyon road or Palace Avenue or along the river up East Alameda. You’ve arrived at the Camino Del Monte Sol Historic District. In this neighborhood are 106 homes and buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The architecture is described as Pueblo Revival, Spanish Revival, Territorial Revival and New Mexico Vernacular. Luxury estates and world-class art galleries nestle beside adobe shepherd’s huts dating back to the 1800’s and earlier. In 1921, five painters know as the Cinco Pintores built their homes on the Camino and became the foundation of the Santa Fe art movement. A string of legends are woven around the image of the burning of Zozobra, first celebrated here on the grounds of Will Schuster’s home.

Agua Fria – The Neighborhoods of Santa Fe, New Mexico

If you’ve ever listened to this gunfighter ballad you may have wondered where this town might be or if it even exists.  It’s a traditional village just 3 miles west of downtown Santa Fe.  Agua Fria Street, (awa  freeah), meaning cold water, runs parallel to the Santa Fe River. This pleasant drive will take you from town almost to the Santa Fe Airport. Here, you can find such diversity as my office on the corner of Agua Fria and Guadalupe Streets, The International Institute of Chinese Medicine and  the spiritually-resourced graduate school, Southwestern College.

Acequia Madre – The Neighborhoods of Santa Fe, New Mexico

My regular Saturday morning walk through the neighborhoods of Santa Fe takes me not only through the secretive streets and old burro alleys but also through the four seasons of the high desert.  With the warming, dry breeze that blows over the rooftops in early spring I walk along the Acequia Madre, (Mother Ditch) on the historic Eastside.  I couldn’t help but stop and take this photo because this year the snow melt has allowed us to have the acequia and the Santa Fe River flow everyday through downtown.  It’s the third oldest irrigation ditch in the United States. Except for tribes and Pueblos, ditch member have the oldest water rights in the state.  The annual ditch clean-up is in April and the whole town is always eager to participate.  I look forward to seeing you in the neighborhood.

Puesta Del Sol – The Neighborhoods of Santa Fe, New Mexico

There’s a slow, majestic sway to the greening willows. Displayed across the surface of the sky is the view of the nightly sunset seen from the vast expanse of  the countryside. This is horse country. Miles of  trails and arroyos course through the pinon and cedars and from here you can ride to the ski basin. This quiet, high desert community is sprinkled with Santa Fe style architecture.  With a sunset like this, who needs words?

The North Hills – The Neighborhoods of Santa Fe, New Mexico

Swirled beneath a fathomless night of bright, whispering stars is an area of Santa Fe known to the folks who live here simply as the North Hills.  The Sangre de Cristo Mountains are part of the southern tip of the Rockies and this neighborhood is not only in that range but in the city limits. From Bishop’s Lodge Road turn right on Valley Drive and wind your way through a surprising assortment of architectural styles. Northern New Mexico pitched roofs, Mediterranean tiles, and Contemporary Pueblo all pepper the hillsides. Some of the attractions here are larger wooded parcels , the proximity to walking trails and arroyos the ease of biking and walking to town and the superb views sunset  and mountain views.  Driving into the hills you’ll eventually come to Hyde Park Road leading to the Santa Fe Ski basin.

Oil Stains On A Garage Floor

I ran across a tip on how to remove oil stains on a garage floor. Remove the surface oil with cat litter to soak it up. Remove that and then make a paste of hot water and laundry detergent. Scrub it. If you need to, sparingly use oven cleaner.  I have lots of tips for use around the house and I’d love to share them. Give me a call at 505.470.4180 if you need any.

Galisteo – The Neighborhoods of Santa Fe, New Mexico

A visit to Northern New Mexico and Santa Fe would not be complete without a Sunday drive to the charming and historic 305 year old village of Galisteo.  Just 18 scenic miles from Santa Fe and 49 miles from Albuquerque, you will see why artists, urban captains of industry, celebrity designers and movie producers choose Galisteo as their home.   July offers the annual rodeo and is a combination of spectacular scenery, cowboy culture and living history. The Galisteo Studio Tour is held every October.   The fall colors of the giant cottonwoods are a stunning sight along the river.

South Capitol, The Neighborhoods of Santa Fe, New Mexico

Since this is the neighborhood in which I live, I’m excited to tell you about this thriving district.  Settled at the turn of the last century there was need for housing close to the bustling Santa Fe Rail Yard. Homes here were built with Victorian architecture, Territorial brick design and Pueblo Revival styles; many of them made of adobe. From our house, we can walk to everything Santa Fe has to offer, including the new trains in the Rail Yard District, the downtown plaza, museums and the Santa Fe River.   The New Mexico Rail Runner will take you to Albuquerque for a mere $8.00. The neighborhood is home to The Farmer’s Market, fabulous art galleries, fine dining and cafes, and excellent shopping opportunities. Rancho Viejo – The Neighborhoods of Santa Fe, New Mexico

“From out of the clear blue of the western sky…comes Sky King!”

I remember television’s Sky King and his niece, Penny, from my childhood as they would flying their Cessna over vast ranch lands. I still get the same feeling today as I had then when I’d dream about Life in the American West.  Rancho Viejo is a neighborhood just 20 minutes from downtown Santa Fe and is developed on 11,000 acres of the former Rancho Viejo Cattle Ranch. Peppered with Juniper and Pinon pines, the subdivision is a collection of villages, each with its own central gathering plaza.  50% of the land is dedicated to natural open space. There’s the Lucky Bean Coffee House in the center and Santa Fe Place (formerly The Villa Linda Mall) is just 5 minutes away featuring Dillard’s, Sears, Gap and Regal Theaters, to name a few. The 13,000 student campus of  the Community College is located in Rancho Viejo, as is the Institute of American Indian Arts.

The Santa Fe River-The Neighborhoods of Santa Fe, New Mexico

Santa Fe is still celebrating its 400th year anniversary and is the oldest capital in the United States.  Here is an exuberant location where sumptuous elegance can hold the eyes of all who walk these narrow streets into Santa Fe’s little world of light, color and magic.  1500 years ago small groups of people were planting and cultivating corn in the fragility of existence along the Santa Fe River. The water’s source  is the ski slopes of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. The 46 mile long river gives 40% of the city’s water supply and was a tributary of the Rio Grande until the Cochiti Dam was built.  FEMA has nation-wide designations for levels of flood emergency such as areas of 100 year floodzones and 500 year flood zones. In 1767  much of the colonial portion of Santa Fe was devasted  by what could be called a 500 year flood, (meaning one could expect a flood once every 500 years). Flow is now released from the McClure Reservoir and the Nichols Reservoir. Vista Redondo – The Neighborhoods of Santa Fe, New Mexico

This week let’s  ease into a gentle stream of traffic and in just 12 minutes emerge onto a majestic New Mexico landscape and a neighborhood called Vista Redonda. It’s perched upon four mesas above the Village of Tesuque with spellbinding vistas of the snow capped mountains and staggeringly brilliant sunsets.  Home to movie stars and captains of industry, the upscale, water-wise community totals almost 700 acres and 82 luxury homes.  There is also easy access to the adjacent National Forest. Predatory Lending Schemes- According to the FBI, mortgage related schemes are up 173% from last year. Beware of lenders who tell you that they are your only chance of getting a loan or owning your own home, and avoid “no money down” loans.  This is a gimmick used to entice consumers to purchase property that they likely cannot afford or are not qualified to purchase.  Be wary of mortgage professionals who falsely alter information to qualify a consumer for a loan.  Do not let anyone persuade you into making a false statement, such as overstating your income, the source of your down-payment or the nature and length of your employment.  Never sign a blank document or a document containing blanks.

Tips for Finding the Perfect Santa Fe Neighborhood

Your neighborhood has a big impact on your lifestyle. Follow these steps to find the perfect community to call home.

 Is it close to your favorite spots? Make a list of the activities — movies, health club, church, etc. — you engage in regularly and stores you visit frequently. See how far you would have to travel from each neighborhood you’re considering to engage in your most common activities.

 Check out the school district. This is especially important if you have children, but it also can affect resale value. The Department of Education in Santa Fe can  provide information on test scores, class size, percentage of students who attend college, and special enrichment programs. If you have school-age children, visit schools in the neighborhoods you’re considering. Also, check out www.schoolmatters.com.

 Find out if the neighborhood is safe. Ask the police department for neighborhood crime statistics. Consider not only the number of crimes but also the type — such as burglaries or armed robberies — and the trend of increasing or decreasing crime. Also, is crime centered in only one part of the neighborhood, such as near a retail area?

 Determine if the neighborhood is economically stable. Check with the Santa Fe City economic development office to see if income and property values in the neighborhood are stable or rising. What is the percentage of homes to apartments? Apartments don’t necessarily diminish value, but do mean a more transient population. Do you see vacant businesses or homes that have been for sale for months?

 See if you’ll make money.  Ask me to get information about price appreciation in the neighborhood. Although past performance is no guarantee of future results, this information may give you a sense of how good of an investment your home will be. A government planning agency also may be able to tell you about planned developments or other changes in the neighborhood — like a new school or highway — that might affect value.

Make personal observations. Once you’ve narrowed your focus to two or three neighborhoods, go there and walk around. Are homes tidy and well maintained? Are streets quiet? How does it feel? Pick a warm day if you can and chat with people working or playing outside.

It was the winter of 1986 when I first came to Santa Fe. I stared in fascination at one of New Mexico’s most photographed buildings, The Inn and Spa at Loretto,  an architectural recreation of the Taos Pueblo.   One of my first solo engagements was in its Ballroom, where I performed six nights a week. Don Cubero Avenue-The Neighborhoods of Santa Fe, New Mexico

As the snow spreads over the city of Santa Fe I walk Oscar, our Pug, through our South Capitol neighborhood and along Don Cubero Avenue.  The avenue is aglow in a lustrous morning light that paints the elms and sidewalks an amber color. Like something out of a Frank Capra film, the homes here have the flavor of old Santa Fe.  Folks are on evening strolls, saying hello from their front porch swings.  The smoky scent of Pinon pine fills the air.  Doctors, lawyers, artists, call this neighborhood home.  Within walking distance are Body, The Railyard, the Plaza and fabulous restaurants.   Vinaigrette is a new, chic  little dining spot specializing in salads.   It’s located at 709 Don Cubero Alley. Christmas at The Palace – The Neighborhoods of Santa Fe, New Mexico

This first week of December is an exciting time for most Santa Fean’s.  Farolitos are in place along the rooftops, the shops are “dressed in holiday style”, we’ve had a gentle dusting of snow and I’m rehearsing the tunes from my CD, “A Tender Santa Fe Christmas”.  The first time our son, Nick, sat on Santa’s knee was in the courtyard of the Palace of The Governors in downtown Santa Fe.  It is the oldest continually occupied public building in the United States. December 11^th is the 25^th annual  Christmas at the Palace. On the 13^th is Las Posadas which re-enacts the travels of Mary and Joseph. Every day and night, somewhere in Santa Fe, are musical performances ranging from exquisite choral arrangements at the St. Francis Cathedral, and Chamber music at The Inn at Loretto . Camino De Las Animas – The Neighborhoods of Santa Fe, New Mexico

The smell of the sleeping streets calms me on my morning walk through Camino De Las Animas. Birds sing and the dogs bark. It’s a short lane near downtown Santa Fe with a gorgeous abundance of Victorian, Territorial and Pueblo Revival architecture.  No less prominent is the home of one of our most famous artists, Gustav Baumann, now owned and preserved by the Historic Santa Fe Foundation.  Several homes on this street are included in the National Register of Historic Places. Michael’s Minute of Real The President signed an extension and expansion of the Homebuyer Tax Credit through April 30, 2010.  As long as the home is under contract by that date and closing occurs by June 30, 2010 an $8,000 tax credit is available for first-time homebuyers (those who have not purchased a home within the last three years). A credit if $6,500 is available for homeowners who have lived in the home they are selling, or have sold, as a principle residence for five consecutive years of the past eight.  These credits are available to buyers with incomes below $125,000 for singles and $225,000 for married couples.  Homes valued at more than $800,000 are not eligible.  Please feel free to call me for more details at 505.470.4180

Saveur  Restaurant – The Neighborhoods of Santa Fe, New Mexico

Today I decided drive through the web of streets to breakfast at one of my favorite French restaurants, Saveur.  I’ve known the proprietaires, Dee and Bernie Rusanowski, for many years and I was delighted to learn that they are returning tomorrow from a trip to the French countryside where they celebrated their 50^th wedding anniversary.  With innovative hospitality they serve chef specials of gourmet soup (today is Seafood Chowder, Cream of Asparagus or Vegan Garden Vegetables).  For a real flavor of French cuisine Santa Fe locals come for breakfast and then  return for lunch to feast on the gorgeous abundance of Dee’s and Bernie’s sumptuous buffet selections.  The small restaurant is scrupulously clean, and the pride in which the chefs have prepared the food lets you know they’ve put their hearts around every detail. Here are some effective ways to lower your insurance premium without lowering your coverage.  Check out online resources.  Go to the Department of Insurance for your state to make an educated comparison of various companies.  Compare quotes from at least three different insurance companies to determine which one has the best coverage and premium.  Consider using one insurer for all your needs.  Some companies offer a multiple policy discount if you buy auto, home and life insurance policies from them as well.  Consider a higher deductible.  Increasing your deductible by just a few hundred dollars can make a big difference in your premium.  Check to see if you belong to any groups or organizations that can get you a lower rate.  Common examples include alumni associations and service clubs.  Dennis Rossi is my insurance agent at The Insurance Connection and he can be reached at 505.984.0206

Oshara Village – The Neighborhoods of Santa Fe, New Mexico

This morning, I toured the new, energy efficient homes in Oshara Village. This neighborhood is located next to the Santa Fe Community College and close to the mall we call Santa Fe Place, the rodeo grounds and the Genoveva Chavez Community Center.  It is a 470 acre mixed-use, “walk able” community and a template of New Urbanism for “green and sustainable” living. The Oshara Flea Market is every Sunday from 9:00-2:00, weather permitting, and it rivals the old Tesuque Flea Market in its size and offerings and fun.

Camino Pequeno – The Neighborhoods of Santa Fe, New Mexico

It’s mid September and the amber light that seeps down through the cottonwoods reveals the most romantic and secluded lanes one could ever hope to find.  In the heart of the historic Eastside neighborhood just off East Alameda is Camino Pequeno and at the end of this heavily wooded lane is an area designated as a Wildlife Preserve, home to beaver, birds and even black bears dining in the apple orchards. Until you take a stroll through this Eden it’s hard to believe that it’s a short walk to the Plaza and Downtown Santa Fe. The Santa Fe River is just a trickle now but its silver threads of water flow parallel to the Acequia de la Muralla, irrigating the gardens of thirteen families residing here.

Amaya Restaurant – The Neighborhoods of Santa Fe, New Mexico

Tonia and I dined with friends this week at Amaya, the restaurant in the Hotel Santa Fe. Only 1 block from our house, I wonder how I have missed this most fabulous of hotels for so long.  The brochure describes the food as innovative blends of traditional Native American cuisines and so with the desire that comes from well-advised ideas, I ordered the Apricot-Chipotle Glazed Rack of Colorado Lamb accompanied by goat cheese potato puree, asparagus and whole carrots, an olive tapenade and thyme lamb jus. Thick, succulent and delicious were the chops, the soup was the divine, the service was excellent, the company sensational and the setting perfect. The Executive Chef is Patrick Kline and the Chef de Cuisine is Walter Dominguez.   The Hotel Santa Fe and Hacienda & Spa are Located at 1501 Paseo de Peralta, their number is 505.825.9867.  What a wonderful neighborhood!

Montezuma Street – The Neighborhoods of Santa Fe, New Mexico

All it takes for a little inspiration to compose my weekly blog on the neighborhoods of Santa Fe is to take a walk around the block. The district is heaving with Friday afternoon traffic as I make my way to Montezuma Street, the hub of the Rail Yard District.  Just a ½ block from my office I can stroll through Border’s Books, The Cowgirl Hall of Fame Restaurant (excellent Bar-B-Q  and live music), Pranzo Italian Grill, Café Dominic, Zia Diner, and Kohnami Sushi.  The Jean Cocteau Theatre is now home to the New Mexico Film and Museum Office.  The Sambusco Center is home to 24 shops including Bohdi Bazaar, Teca Tu, Santa Fe Pens and the best shoe store in the world, On Your Feet.

Victoria Street, Santa Fe, New Mexico

As if the city were speaking to me, I suddenly grab my camera, speed off in my red MINI Cooper convertible and drive the three blocks along the Santa Fe River to explore the hidden lanes of Santa Fe‘s Eastside neighborhoods.  Today I find myself on Victoria Street, a cul-de-sac dirt road under a canopy of shade trees where one can easily get lost musing about the artists, poets and Bohemians who’ve made this town the artist’s haven that it is. Inspired by the Cinco Pintores, famed straw appliqué artists Alisa and Elisio Rodriguez spent their entire lives creating their unique works in this neighborhood.  For a taste of local history, Santa Fe’s 400^th Anniversary celebration has already begun.

There’s been much uncertainty about tax credits, but they’re actually pretty straightforward.  The federal government will give first-time homebuyers an $8,000 tax credit and this is the best part, it doesn’t have to be paid back unless you sell your home within the first three years.  That’s a lot of free money!  In some states (e.g., California) there’s an additional $10,000 available to 10,000 home buyers of a newly constructed home.  Think about it-you could be eligible for $8,000 from the feds, $10,000 from the state, the lowest interest rates in decades and prices at record lows.  Now might be the best time to buy.

Have you seen the film, Red Sky at Morning?  Richard Crenna starred in this story of a boy’s life in Santa Fe during World War II. It was filmed here in the neighborhood of the historic East side. Walking the street of Cerro Gordo (Fat Hill) you will find that not much has changed.  The Santa Fe River slips through the sleeping city as the tones of St. Francis Cathedral hover in the air. One can take the short 2 mile trek along the river from the Plaza toward the lower slopes of the Santa Fe National Forest to the end of  Cerro Gordo Road.  The 20 mile long Dale Ball Hiking Trail begins there. My family and I always look forward to visiting Upaya Zen Center for the seasonal celebrations of the equinox.  The area is heavily wooded and the lush, arboreal landscape is a surprise for most visitors. This weekend is the 58^th annual Spanish Market happening in Santa Fe.  If you ever wanted to see the history of New Mexican Spanish arts and culture then now is the time to come.

Upper Canyon Road – The Neighborhoods of Santa Fe, New Mexico

The sky shines with an evening sun that turns the Sangre de Cristo (Blood of Christ) Mountains the color of watermelon. Tonia and I were married in the gardens of the Randall Davy Audubon Center at the end of Upper Canyon Road.  12 years later our son, Nick, became a camp councilor there. Fed by the snowmelt, three reservoirs serve as some of the city’s drinking water and spill into the Santa Fe River. Just 3 miles from the Santa Fe Plaza and bordering the Santa Fe National Forest is a 190 acre urban preserve run by the Nature Conservancy.  Willow trees and cottonwoods, beaver and birds paint the landscape along the trailhead of the 20-mile Dale Ball Hiking Trail.  A series of ponds and wetlands make this neighborhood first choice for our family’s regular hikes.
